The SMS Sender ID Register Is Mandatory: What Perth Businesses Need to Do

If your Perth business sends text messages to customers — appointment reminders, invoice nudges, delivery updates, marketing offers — you need to register your SMS Sender ID with your telco or messaging provider. The Australian Communications and Media Authority's (ACMA) SMS Sender ID Register became mandatory on 1 July 2026, and if you haven't registered, your texts are now being flagged "Unverified" on customers' phones and shunted into a separate message thread that looks exactly like the spam pile. That's not a hypothetical risk from here on — it's happening right now to businesses that missed the deadline.

What the SMS Sender ID Register Actually Is

A "sender ID" is the name that appears at the top of a text message instead of a phone number — think "ATO", "AusPost" or your own business name. Scammers have spent years hijacking these branded sender IDs to make fraudulent texts look legitimate, which is exactly how a lot of the "your parcel couldn't be delivered" and "your invoice is overdue" scam texts have worked.

ACMA's fix, part of the federal government's wider Fighting Scams campaign, is a central register where every business or organisation using a branded sender ID has to formally register it. From 1 July 2026, only registered sender IDs get delivered as a normal, named message. Anything unregistered is labelled "Unverified" and grouped separately by the phone's messaging app — a visual cue to the recipient that says, in effect, "this might be a scam."

Australians lost close to $18 million to SMS scams in 2025 alone, so the policy goal makes sense. The problem for legitimate small businesses is that an unregistered, unverified sender ID now reads as a red flag too — even when the message is a perfectly ordinary appointment reminder from your own clinic, trades business or professional practice.

Who This Affects

Registration applies to any business, not-for-profit or agency that sends texts under a branded name rather than a plain mobile number. In practice that covers:

  • Appointment and booking reminders sent via practice management or trade-scheduling software.
  • Invoice and payment reminders from accounting or job-management platforms.
  • Marketing and promotional texts sent through an SMS marketing tool.
  • Two-factor authentication codes sent under your organisation's name.
  • Delivery, order and service-status updates.

If any of your systems send SMS under your business name — even a booking app you didn't set up yourself — that sender ID needs to be on the register.

What Happens If You Haven't Registered

Nothing gets blocked outright, but the practical effect is the same as being marked as spam. Unverified messages are:

  • Labelled "Unverified" directly on the recipient's phone.
  • Grouped into a separate thread, away from your business's usual conversation history with that customer.
  • Far more likely to be ignored, deleted or reported — which is corrosive if that text was a payment reminder or an appointment confirmation you actually needed the customer to see.

For a Perth business that relies on SMS to reduce no-shows or chase overdue invoices, this quietly undermines the whole point of sending the text in the first place.

How to Register

You don't register directly with ACMA — you register through whichever telco or SMS messaging platform sends the texts on your behalf. That might be your mobile carrier, or a third-party platform like a booking system, invoicing tool or SMS marketing service.

  1. Identify every system that sends branded SMS on your business's behalf — don't forget tools a staff member set up independently, like a marketing platform or a trade-booking app.
  2. Contact each provider and ask specifically whether they've registered your sender ID(s) with ACMA's SMS Sender ID Register, or whether you need to supply business verification details (ABN, business name) to do so yourself through their portal.
  3. Confirm registration is complete, not just requested — some providers were still processing backlogs of registrations well after the 1 July deadline.
  4. Repeat the check whenever you add a new tool that sends SMS under your business name.

If a provider can't tell you whether they're registered, that's worth treating as a warning sign about the platform generally — see the ACMA's own guidance at acma.gov.au/sms-sender-id-register for the current list of requirements.

Why This Sits Alongside Your Other Scam Defences

Sender ID registration is a genuinely useful anti-scam measure, but it's one layer, not a complete answer — the same way we've written before about QR code phishing (quishing) slipping past email filters because it targets a different channel entirely. Scammers who can't spoof a registered sender ID will simply lean harder on email, QR codes and phone impersonation instead. Registering is necessary, but it doesn't replace staff training, email filtering or a habit of verifying unexpected payment or account requests through a second channel.

A Quick Checklist

  • List every system that texts customers under your business name.
  • Confirm each one is registered on ACMA's SMS Sender ID Register.
  • Ask new SMS or booking vendors about sender ID registration before you sign up.
  • Review this again any time you change providers.
